Almost 4 years ago I returned from a year of travel around Asia and Africa that challenged and permanently changed my global perspective. Aside from being a great adventure it was also the first time in my life that I was confronted with seeing poverty. The causes of poverty and injustice in the world are complex and I have spent a great deal of time pondering what the pursuit of justice and equality means for me and the meaningful action I can take.

One thing that struck me again and again was the universal struggle of women in developing countries. Another was how much impact empowered women can have in strengthening their communities and breaking the cycle of poverty. Supporting and empowering women and girls seems to be the most effective and universally successful strategy for raising the broad standard of living for communities across the globe. I think this is well documented by research, but it was also plainly visible as I traveled around observing communities in various stages of development. I think there are many great reasons for optimism and hope with the right foundations.

This year to celebrate my 43rd birthday (March 2) I have organized a small fundraising campaign for the Because I am a Girl program managed by Plan International Canada. Please join me raising funds that can help empower girls and women in the developing world.

The amount is not as important as the purpose.
